American Quarter Horse

There are more than 3 million Quarter Horses in the world, making them the largest horse breed in the world by population. This hugely popular American horse gets its name from being incredibly fast over short distances: there are very few horses able to beat a Quarter Horse in races shorter than a quarter of a mile.

The breed has its origins in the British Warmbloods introduced to North America by the colonists and pilgrims in the 1600s. They were crossed with other breeds, such as the Chickasaw horse as well as more 'classic' breeds like the Arabian fullblood.

The Quarter Horse is a steady and balanced horse with a calm temperament which is perfectly suited to hobby riding, competitive riding and use as a work horse. Quite simply a fantastic all-rounder!

Chincoteague Pony

This unusual pony has a truly mysterious and sad history. From Assateague Island, spread across the two states of Maryland and Virginia in the USA, the Chincoteague has lived and developed in peace and freedom for many generations. How they got there in the first place is a mystery, but theory has it that today's Chincoteague are descended from the horses traveling upon a Spanish galleon which sank off the island in the 16th Century.

Life on the island has never been easy. Not much grazing, terrible storms, and heavy inbreeding have all combined to almost eradicate the little population. Crossing with Shetland and Welsh ponies have strengthened the breed, and contributions from the public as well as efforts from the local fire brigade have all worked to make the Chincoteague strong and viable again.

The Chincoteague still live wild on their island, but once a year they're gathered together and a select few colts are auctioned off. The proceeds from the auction go towards caring for and protecting the herd.||Of course it didn't take long for the horse lovers of Jorvik to bring the beautiful Chincoteague to the island, and this hardy, intelligent and easy-to-train horse is very much loved.

Fjord Horse

Fjord horses are small but very strong, with a very special mane which is often to be found cut into cool patterns. They have a fantastic temperament and are great with kids, making them a popular choice all over the world. Nobody really knows when Fjord horses came to Jorvik, but a popular theory is that they came with the Norwegian Vikings who ravaged the island. Some people believe that it's quite the opposite, and that the Vikings took the horses home with them to Norway from Jorvik. They believe that the lovely little Fjords originated from the tall and barren mountains of Jorvik, in the mythical Valley of the Kallters; a place spoken of in legend but that has never been found.

Friesian Horse

Friesian horses come from an ancient bloodline that is thought to stretch back for thousands of years. The breed developed as a work horse but became popular as a war horse in the middle ages when it was used by heavily armored knights. Today the Friesian horse is a popular and well-loved family horse with a great personality.

In what way are the Friesian Horses different?

  • They lift their legs higher when they trot and gallop!
  • Their mane moves in the wind!
  • They are bigger than the other horses on Jorvik! (But not faster)
  • Only experienced riders can ride the Friesian Horse! (Your character needs to be level 12)
  • You can't change manes and tails.

Icelandic Horse

It was in the late 1300s that the Icelandic horse was first brought to Jorvik by one of Iceland's great horse breeders, Jokul Tómasson. Jokul had, together with his daughter Brynhildur, spent many years in the Ottoman Empire, working for the wealthy trader Asil Birdal. When Ottoman Emperor Murad I died in the summer of 1389, Jokul and Brynhildur decided to leave.

Since the 10th Century, it has been forbidden to return Icelandic horses to Iceland once they've already left, so Jokul and Brynhildur would have had to leave their beloved horses behind if they were to be able to return to their homeland. This could never be an option for them, and so they decided to take their horses to Jorvik one snowy, wintery day at the end of 1389.

The Icelandic horse quickly became very popular amongst the islanders and are used today for both leisure riding as well as competitive racing. Of all the wonderful qualities that make the Icelandic unique, the most famous has to be its special gait. In addition to the usual walking styles, the Icelandic horse also has a unique gait called the 'tölt'.

To be able to tölt, hold down Shift at the same time as increasing your speed from a walking pace.

Note: you need to be level 16 to buy an Icelandic Horse.

Jorvik Pony

The typical Jorvik Pony has a sunny disposition but can be a single-minded, mischievous and stubborn little horse. It has short legs resulting in a lower overall height, and a more prominent head than most horses. Because of their small size and chubby build they have difficulty maintaining the speed of other wild Jorvik horses. While the Jorvik Pony is not really cut out for performance related competition it remains a favourite breed among Jorvik horse owners who praise the fun and laughs that come from spending time with this charming little horse.

Jorvik ponies come in many different colours.

NOTE: Remember that ponies are not as fast as full-size horses.
